Dermal Fillers
How do I know if I'm able to book for dermal fillers?
You may complete a video or phone consultation first if you prefer to speak with one of our injectors prior to scheduling a procedure.
Generally, we do not give Dermal Filler to patients:
With severe allergies that have caused anaphylaxis or history of multiple severe allergies
With a history of allergies to Gram-positive bacterial proteins or hyaluronic acid
Who are pregnant or breastfeeding
We would recommend a phone consultation first if you have a history of:
Excessive scarring or pigmentation disorders
Immunosuppressive therapy used to decrease the body’s immune response
Use of blood thinners
Allergy to topical anesthetics (such as lidocaine)
History of herpes simplex (cold sores of the mouth)
What can I expect before treatment?
We ask that you avoid medications that thin the blood, which can lead to bruising or bleeding ten days prior to your procedure. These medications include ibuprofen, aspirin, fish oil, and vitamin E. During the day of the procedure avoid activities which may increase blood flow to your face, this includes exercising and facials. The treatment time takes about 15-20 minutes.
You should plan your treatment date to avoid:
Dental work or cleaning for 2 weeks before and after the injection
Vaccinations that produce an immune response for 2 weeks before and after injection
Air travel for 24 hours post injection
What can I expect during treatment?
We want you to be as comfortable as possible. Your injector will first numb your skin with a topical anesthetic which should take effect after five to ten minutes. You will feel a slight pinch as the injection begins, and as the filler is injected you may feel a slight sting. Periodically during the procedure, we will pause so that you can assess the appearance of your skin and provide feedback on volume and symmetry.
What can I expect after treatment?
Afterwards, your injector will provide an ice pack to reduce post procedure swelling. The numbing medication will start to wear off after fifteen to thirty minutes. Commonly there will be mild bruising, swelling, firmness and tenderness at the treatment area that can last for a few hours or, at times, a couple of days.
Plan to avoid:
Any rubbing or massage to treated areas remainder of the day
Strenuous exercise or activity for the remainder of the day
Drinking alcohol for a minimum of 12 hours as this may contribute to bruising
Extended UV exposure until redness has subsided and use of sunscreen is recommended
Laser treatments for a minimum of 6 weeks
Other skincare treatments for 1 week
What are some risks involved with dermal filler treatments?
Significant side effects are rare, but depending on the severity and type, urgent intervention may be needed. Less severe events involve local or widespread allergic reaction that may require treatment with steroids and antihistamines for a short period of time. Post treatment infections are rare, but may require antibiotics. Lastly, a blockage in one of the facial vessels (vascular occlusion) would require immediate intervention with medication to dissolve the filler in the region. We take great precaution to limit the risk of this event and carry medication with us to eliminate the blockage should it occur.
Wrinkle Relaxers
What are wrinkle relaxers and which product is used?
Wrinkle relaxers also known as neurotoxins are prescribed medications that smooth fine lines and wrinkles in the desired treatment area leading to an overall smoother appearance. Neurotoxins are FDA-approved to treat moderate to severe crow’s feet, frown lines, glabellar area also known as “11s” between your eyebrows, and forehead lines. Neurotoxins can also help treat those suffering from migraine headaches.
How much neurotoxin will I need for my treatment?
Depending on your age, desired look and the severity of your fine lines and wrinkles the quantity of units may vary. Our male patients typically require more units due to increased strength of the facial muscles. You can reference the below range as a general estimate of what you might need.
What can I expect before the treatment?
You will be asked to fill out a health history form to help us understand if you have certain medical conditions that might make treatment unsafe. Prior to treatment the injector will want to understand your expectations and desired outcomes. After which they will assess the regions of your faces that would most likely benefit from neurotoxin injections and propose a treatment plan in partnership with your feedback.
What can I expect during the treatment?
Your injector will be using a very fine needle and each injection will only take a few seconds. You might feel slight discomfort and/or pain during the injection. Typically, you can expect to receive injections in five to fourteen facial muscle locations.
What can I expect after the treatment?
The results may begin to appear 1-3 days post-treatment. You will see full results within 10-14 days. Results may vary depending on your lifestyle, benefits will last for 3-4 months. We ask our patients to avoid any massage, pressure, or touching of the treatment area(s) for 4 hours after injection. As well as avoiding facials, waxing, and massage appointments for 24 hours after injection. These activities may alter the placement of the neurotoxin, causing undesirable results. You should plan to not exercise for 4 hours after injection. There may be small red whelp-like bumps (resembling a mosquito bite) present on the skin after injection, but these will resolve and disappear within 30 minutes. You will follow up with your injector with a 2 week follow up visit.
What are some side effects of neurotoxins?
Yes, there may be side effects after receiving treatment, but most are mild and temporary. The most common potential side effects include pain, swelling, and redness near the injection sites. There is a small risk for more severe side effects including allergic reactions, eyelid drooping, headaches, fatigue, and vision problems.
